"Birds of Paradise" is my second series of flowers. I have been photographing the Atlantic Ocean in Rockaway Beach, New York City, since 1996. Six series taken at the shore include "Seascapes 1996 thru 2006", "Winter", "Summer" 2009, "Waves in Black and White" 2011, "October Waves" 2013, as well as "A Cloud Study, Sunset" 2016 and "City Tulips", which was photographed along Park Avenue in New York City.
The Bird of Paradise flower is known as the ultimate symbol of paradise and freedom. It is the quintessential tropical flower, representing faithfulness, love and thoughtfulness. The Bird of Paradise gets its name from the fact that its flower is made of three bright orange petals and three blue petals which are fused together into a single bud. As the flower blooms, each petal makes its debut and the resulting shape mirrors that of a tropical bird in flight.
Although they are best known for their bright orange and blue colors, their flowers can also be white, as in Georgia O’Keefe’s "White Bird of Paradise". All series share a minimalist aesthetic, exploring the most basic elements of composition, contrasting light, texture and form. "Birds of Paradise" is intended to straddle the relationship between real and abstract.
